The institute will offer programmes in education, research, and cultural exchange and will also house a library and a museum of Pakistani history and culture. It is expected that the institute will become a hub for Pakistani-American exchange, with the hope of creating a foundation of understanding between the two countries.
The old chancery building located on R-Street in northwest Washington is the latest foreign asset to be sold for USD 6.8 million to Shahal Khan, a Pakistani national. The government has confirmed the bid and said that the building has been sold to minimize losses incurred on the property.

The development came following the approval by the cabinet in November 2021 to auction the Pakistani embassy, which had lost its diplomatic status and had only completed 60% of its renovation. In a recent development, Khan, the highest bidder, has said that he plans to transform the building into a research institute for the promotion of peace and understanding between Pakistan and the United States.
