Islamabad: Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Hussain recently announced on social media that a meeting between the All Pakistan Automobiles Association and government representatives had been planned for February 15 — with the session organized to deliberate on the introduction of various reforms in the auto sector, a news source reported.

In addition to the auto sector, major reforms to standardize the food sector and electronics are also being introduced. The purpose of introducing a standardized system in the manufacturing of cars, electronics and food items is to improve the quality of products in each sector.

The local auto sector has traditionally been dominated by the three companies; Honda, Toyota and Suzuki — all Japanese firms. However, in the past, many Pakistanis have often complained about the high market prices of these firms, and the lack of safety features in their locally produced cars.

Due to several reasons, car sales in Pakistan have been dropping consistently. In January alone, the aforementioned auto manufacturers had reported a 48% decline in sales as compared to the same period last year.
