Islamabad: Pakistan on Thursday is set to launch an international appeal for funds worth USD 595 million to be used for meeting the needs of the country’s citizens amid the coronavirus spread, and to ward off its adverse economic impact — according to news sources.

The appeal will be made through a virtual event, which will be attended by Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Director General World Health Organisation (WHO) Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Vice President Asian Development Bank (ADB), Managing Director World Bank (WB) and other senior officials.

Initially, the government is introducing a ‘coordinated multi-sectoral Preparedness and Response Plan’ with a USD 595 million budget to combat and mitigate the novel coronavirus spread. The official press release in this regard highlighted that the donors will also be asked to participate in, and fund, the battle against immediate and lasting impacts of coronavirus.
The appeal has been formulated by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and other concerned government agencies.
