Islamabad: Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry on Wednesday announced that Pakistan will have electric vehicles on the road this year — calling this development a ‘matter of pride’ for the country, a news source reported. He made these comments while speaking at the signing ceremony for the Strategic Alliance Agreement that will help establish an electric vehicles’ value chain in Pakistan. The alliance was signed between Daewoo Pakistan Express bus service and Skywell Automobile China.

As per the memorandum signed, the project will be executed in two phases. Initially, funds worth USD 50 million will be invested in establishing the electric car setup, and in the next phase, the manufacturing of electric buses be initiated.
On the occasion, the minister further announced that the four-wheeler electric vehicle policy is also expected to be finalised in 20 days.

He added that it was his belief that electric vehicles would significantly help reduce pollution, which has been a significant problem in recent years; particularly for the residents of major cities like Lahore and Karachi.
