Lahore: The International Hydropower Association (IHA) has ranked Pakistan as the third best country in the world–among the top 20 countries considered–in terms of hydel power adoption; for its newly established hydropower capacity of 2018, a news source reported.

IHA, which is a United Kingdom-based firm, announced the global rankings in its recently issued ‘2019: Hydropower Status Report — Sector Trends and Insights’ publication.
The organisation was formed under the auspices of UNESCO in 1995. It serves as a platform to promote operational best practices related to the hydropower industry, and aims for the continuous improvement of the sector.
According to the IHA report, Pakistan added 2,487MW of hydel electricity to its national grid last year. China and Brazil clinched the first two spots by adding 8,540MW and 3,866MW to their systems, respectively.

Moreover, the report places neighbouring India at the 8th position after the country recently added 535MW of hydel electricity to its system. Turkey (1,085MW) and Angola (668MW) attained the fourth and fifth spots, respectively.
