Islamabad: Pakistan Railways (PR) has announced its decision to utilise its vacant land tracts spread across the country to generate revenue, a news source reported. To this effect, the department is expected to launch development projects on 10,937 acres in the near future.

According to details, PR owns 167,690 acres of land across the country. They added that the department had leased out 15,172 acres of land for different purposes. Out of this, the Ministry of Railways owns 8,439 acres of vacant land in Punjab, 263 acres in Sindh, 1,355 acres in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), and 880 acres in Balochistan. Meanwhile, 3,330 acres of land remained under encroachment, they said.
Moreover, PR is currently using 1,086 acres of land for Railway Housing Societies in the four provinces. According to officials, 806 acres of land is under the use of regular and non-regular katchi abadis.
The department has reserved 12,808 acres of land in all provinces for the purposes of future operational use. This includes 4,364 acres in Punjab, 900 acres in Sindh, 1,800 acres in KP, and 5,744 acres in Balochistan.

The incumbent government has also leased out 6,496 acres of PR’s land to different departments and private persons for generating revenue via parking stands, agricultural activities, and stacking, premium shops.
