Lahore: Pakistan Railways (PR) launched its first cold chain freight service in a bid to diversify its operations and step into economical and environment-friendly freight solutions, news sources reported on January 12. The project is launched by the Pakistan Railways Freight Transportation Company (PRFTC) and Pakistan Intermodal Limited (PIL).

Reportedly, the first train reached Wazir Mansion Railway Station in Karachi from the dry port of Marine International Container Terminal (MICT), Prem Nagar, Lahore. At the first stage, PR has decided to operate one train per week which will be further enhanced to 12 trains per month. The project is a one-of-a-kind initiative developed by PR in an attempt to tap into a significant market for freight services and cargo. According to reports, if the PR is managed and maintained, it will be able to generate billions of rupees in income while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and traffic and infrastructure damage caused by trucks and road freight transit by 75%.

Furthermore, it was said that the Reefer Cargo system will improve the railways’ economic model, making it feasible for the future cold blockchain corridor.
