Lahore: Pakistan Railways (PR) has received the first batch of high-speed rail coaches from China, news sources reported on November 28.

The PR has received a total of 46 out of 230 new high-speed passenger coaches under a USD 140 million agreement with China’s CRRC Tangshan Locomotive & Rolling Stock Company. As per the PR, the remaining 184 coaches will be manufactured in Pakistan by the PR engineers and technical staff under the supervision of Chinese experts.’
Under the agreement signed in November last year, the PR spokesperson said that passenger rail coaches will include 80 compartments each for the economy and air-conditioned classes, 30 parlour cars, and 20 vans each for luggage and brakes. Moreover, two hundred freight vans will be imported, while 620 of these bogies will be prepared at the factory.

It is important to note that under the China-Pakistan-Economic-Corridor (CPEC) Pakistan Railways is scheduled to be upgraded and expanded to accommodate freight-related matters and improve connectivity between Gwadar port and the China-Pakistan Border.
