Islamabad: Pakistan and Iraq on Wednesday (September 22) signed an agreement to start ferry services from Karachi to Basra for pilgrims, news sources reported.

The boat service will run from Karachi to Basra, allowing pilgrims to visit Karbala, Najaf, and Baghdad. The agreement was struck after a meeting between Iraqi Ambassador Hamid Abbas Lafta and Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah. The minister stated that the government is grateful to the Iraqi government for letting Pakistani pilgrims visit sacred sites, adding that this agreement is another step toward improving brotherly relations. He stated that the administration will complete the necessary preparations by the end of the year to allow pilgrims to visit.

It is important to mention that Iraq is the second holiest site for Muslims around the world as they visit the shrines of important religious figures. The government has reached an agreement with the Iraqi government to allow 60,000 pilgrims from Pakistan during the ‘Chehlum’ processions.
