Islamabad: Pakistan and Iran have signed 39 memorandums of understanding (MOUs) to strengthen economic ties and improve bilateral trade between the two neighbours, news sources reported on January 17.

The MoUs were signed at the conclusion of a two-day meeting of the joint border trade committee held in Quetta. The meeting discussed various issues related to the implementation of agreements signed between the two countries. The following provisions were agreed upon between the two sides:
• Agreement to open more joint border markets
• Increase bilateral trade to USD 5 billion annually
• Make joint investments for the provision of the required infrastructure in the customs, trade, transportation, and airline sectors
• Opening of an additional border crossing point at Kohak-Panjgur
• Reducing tariffs and increasing the number of items included in the preferential trade agreement
• Designating Gabd-Ramdan and Pishin/Mand as TIR borders
• Sheltering Pakistani rice at Zahidan Customs.
• Increase the number of railway wagons for freight transportation to 500 upon completion of the bridge at Hirak by the end of June 2023

Both sides expressed hope that the MoUs would bring positive changes to the economic relations between the two countries.
