The said meeting was held under the chair of PEC governing body Engineer Mohammad Waseem Asghar and was informed that 468mm rainfall was observed in Karachi. In response, the PEC body proposed that a master plan of all major roads be revised to ensure immediate drainage of rainwater.
The meeting was also briefed regarding the chronic municipal and infrastructure issues persisting in Karachi. It was communicated that 68 nullahs of Karachi would be restructured from sewers to drainage – in a bid to avoid urban flooding caused by heavy showers. Also, it was highlighted that Karachi produced as much as 20,000 tonnes of solid waste on a daily basis, while the authorities were only equipped to lift 3-4 thousand tonnes a day.

The meeting highlighted the need for a public awareness campaign regarding the proper disposal of domestic waste. Also, an environmental study was suggested ‘to reduce the volume of runoff water’. The PEC body also suggested that a dedicated authority for stormwater management should also be created to properly address the issue.
Engineer Asghar also said that PEC believed it should assist the government to revive the glory of country’s commercial hub as the government had pledged a huge investment (under the PKR 1 trillion Karachi Transformation Package) for the city.
