Islamabad: Pakistan and China on Monday (October 24) held the third meeting of the Joint Working Group (JWG) to discuss the long-term plan for China-Pakistan-Economic-Corridor (CPEC), news sources reported.

The meeting reviewed and summarised the state of CPEC project implementation and deliberated on the next course of action for CPEC’s long-term plan implementation. As per the details, both sides agreed to start work on the second phase of CPEC, which is focused on agricultural cooperation, industrial cooperation, science and technology, information technology, and socioeconomic development. During the meeting, both sides discussed the status of the development work on the following projects taking place under the CPEC:
- Karachi-Lahore Motorway
- Multan-Sukkur Motorway Section
- Karakorum Highway (Phase-II) – upgradation and reconstruction from Raikot to Islamabad via Mansehra
- Construction of Eastbay Expressway
- Construction of 1,320 megawatts (MW) Port Qasim Power Plant
- Construction of 1320 megawatts (MW) Sahiwal Power Plant
- Construction of 720 megawatts (MW) Karot Hydropower Plant
- New Gwadar International Airport
- Construction of the 873 MW Suki Kinari Hydropower Project

The Pakistani side proposed adding ‘water resources management and climate change’ as a new area of cooperation under the CPEC framework for effective water resource management and the construction of climate-resilient infrastructure in the country.
