Islamabad: The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has ranked Pakistan as a 4th Generation Regulator (G4) – making it the first country in South Asia to achieve the status, according to news sources.
The ITU recently issued a report titled ‘Global ICT Regulatory Outlook 2020 (GIRO)’, in which Pakistan achieved a score of 88 out of 100 – highlighting that Pakistan’s Information and Communications Technology (ICT) regulations are governed by social and economic policy goals.

Out of the 38 countries in the Asia-Pacific region, only eight percent have managed to achieve the G4 status. Pakistan is now among the top five regulators in the region, with a global ranking of 48.
As per the publication, the report is developed on the data gathered from 193 counties that form the foundation for the ‘ICT Regulatory Tracker’ – which operates as an evidence-based tool to aid decision-makers and regulators to monitor the rapid evolution of ICT regulation.

Additionally, the report breaks down that Pakistan scored 20/20 on regulatory authority, 19/20 on the regulatory mandate, 27/28 for competition framework and 22/30 for the regulatory regime. It further highlighted Pakistan’s journey towards collaborative regulation as a special feature.
Additionally, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has reiterated its continuous resolve to achieving new international benchmarks, protecting consumer interest and facilitating the public-private collaborations for the socioeconomic benefit of the country.
