Karachi: Pakistan is ranked 29th in the world in terms of natural gas reserves, news sources reported on June 27. As per the shared statistics, Sindh accounts for 63% of these total gas reserves, and Balochistan’s Sui region is the largest single gas field with a 6% share in total production.
According to reports, the information was revealed in a gas monitor report submitted by Dr Amanullah Mahar, Director of the Center for Environmental Sciences at the University of Sindh in Jamshoro. The report said that at present Sindh’s gas field holds gas reserves that are 12 times the annual needs of the country. This means that the reserves will be consumed in the next 12 years. Furthermore, it was determined that the gas field’s total extractable potential is 24 trillion cubic feet (TCFT) of gas, with a daily extraction of 4 billion cubic feet (BCFT).
Given the ongoing shortage of natural gas being experienced, the government is increasingly relying on an expensive and high-carbon alternative of Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) that is also subjected to market fluctuation, specifically to the international political economy. The report urged the government to explore other energy resources to preserve the environment and national reserves spent on LNG imports.
The survey also found that a large portion of the extractable and imported gas is used in power generation and industry, with domestic usage increasing. The government has announced plans to convert thermal energy plants to use local coal in order to avoid energy shortages, which are projected to slow down industries and, eventually, the economy.
