Karachi: At least 930 residential plots are being used for commercial activities in the metropolis, according to the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA).
SBCA revealed these details in a report it compiled on the Supreme Court’s orders. North Nazimabad has the highest number of residential plots converted for commercial purposes.

In the report, Nazimabad and PECHS have been ranked in the second and third positions, respectively; followed by Tariq Road and Shahrah-e-Faisal. Karsaz Road is also included in the list.
The Supreme Court recently banned the commercialisation of amenity and residential plots in Karachi. A two-judge bench comprised of Justice Gulzar Ahmed and Justice Sajjad Ali Shah gave these orders.

The apex court ordered the authorities concerned to demolish all illegal buildings in Karachi. Moreover, it necessitated the Environmental Protection Agency’s approval for the construction of all future commercial buildings.
The court expressed concerns over instances of mushroom growth in the provincial capital. It also sought recommendations from the Sindh government on Karachi’s restoration.
