Lahore: The municipal corporations, development authorities, and education and health departments will be working under mayor in the newly approved local body system, according to a news report. The position of deputy mayor has also been abolished under the new system.
The new Local Body Act 2019 will be approved by Punjab Assembly soon. It will be divided into two sections. Under the law neighbourhood and village councils will be formed.
The elected representatives will be provided funds according to the population falling in their respective areas. Development funds worth PKR 570 per person will be granted to each of the elected representatives in rural area, while in case of cities more than PKR 1,000 per person will be provided.
Earlier the local government system had been approved by Prime Minister Imran Khan. The new system is expected to empower the local representatives at grass-roots levels.
