Karachi: The city administration has been given a 10-day deadline to clear Nishtar Road and other adjoining areas of encroachments and other illegal structures, a news source reported. A two-judge bench, headed by Justice Syed Hassan Azhar Rizvi, issued the directives.
The bench directed the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and SP City Nishtar Road to lodge criminal cases against traders involved in re-establishing encroachments. It also sought a report within 15 days and adjourned the hearing till January 23.
Karachi Mayor Wasim Akhtar had earlier claimed that KMC suffered losses worth PKR 40 million as many of its tenants were displaced when the buildings constructed by the civic body were demolished on Supreme Court orders.
He said the city administration would provide alternative spaces to legitimate tenants to reopen their businesses. They will be allotted shops in Parking Plaza and Shahabuddin Market. However, Akhtar said that those who owned illegal shops would not be compensated.
