Karachi: Sindh Transport Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has given a one-month deadline to the Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA) to make the Orange Line section of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system operational, according to news published in the national dailies on May 7.

The transport minister held a meeting with SMTA, in which, he directed the officials concerned to submit a report about the issues delaying the completion of the project. He asked the Sindh Transport Secretary Abdul Haleem Sheikh to get help from Sindh Infrastructure Development Company Limited (SIDCL) for completing the project.
Moreover, Minister Memon informed that he will contact Federal Planning and Development Minister Ahsan Iqbal for assistance to make the Orange Line bus service operational. He disclosed that the project must be operational within a month to enable access to a comfortable and modern transit facility for the locals.

During the meeting, the transport minister was briefed on the progress of the BRT project. He was informed that the first phase of Green Line BRT has been operational till the Numaish intersection while the Orange Line, Blue Line, and Red Line bus services are in the implementation phase. Minister Memon was notified that 98% of civil works for the Orange Line bus service have been completed, from Orangi Town to the Board Office intersection. Furthermore, it was disclosed that the Sindh government has already made payment to SIDCL for 20 buses. The buses of the BRT project are expected to reach Karachi’s port by May 11.
