Multan: Multan Development Authority (MDA)) Director General (DG) Tanveer Iqbal has ordered his staff to launch a crackdown against illegal parking stands in the city, reported a news source. The operation is targeted against setups of free parking stands where people are unfairly charged for leaving their vehicles.
The MDA DG said that making sufficient allocations for parking space is mandatory for commercial centres, parking stands and wedding halls. Meeting this condition is also mentioned in the development authority’s building bylaws – with parking spaces being meant to facilitate people who choose to visit these places.

The director general observed that some ‘business-minded’ people charge for these free parking facilities by awarding a contract to another party.
MD Iqbal has instructed his team to take serious action against people charging parking fees at all such venues. The MDA staff has also received the directives to register criminal cases against people identified to be behind these extortion arrangements.

Reportedly, the MDA has completed a survey of all commercial buildings where visitors are being charged for parking space. The findings of the survey will help the development authority launch the said crackdown with the help of police and special teams from the Tax and Excise Department.
