Karachi: The Karachi Development Authority (KDA), Sindh Building Control Authority (SCBA), and the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) on Monday conducted operations against hazardous structures in their respective administered areas, a news source reported. As per the publication, KMC’s anti-encroachment team demolished a five-storey illegal building, which spread over an area of 80-square yards in Quaidabad, Malir.

The civic agencies accelerated their campaign against illegal and hazardous buildings after the collapse of three residential buildings in Golimar on Thursday. KMC also conducted an anti-encroachment operation on Kashmir Road in the district East, and removed shops and cabins from the roadside.

Additionally, SCBA authorities razed a five-storey building, which was constructed over an area of 40-square yards in Liaquatabad No 3. Similarly, SCBA also commenced with the demolition of a six-storey building constructed on a 60 square-yard plot. Reportedly, the SCBA building bylaws do not allow the construction of buildings with more than two-storeys on an area smaller than 80 square yards.

The KDA conducted a separate operation and vacated 500 to 1000 yard-plots in Surjani Town’s Sector 8. The authority’s personnel faced resistance from the public, which led to the operation being halted midway. In a separate development, the Clifton Cantonment Board (CBC) wrote a letter to the officials concerned to demolish illegal structures in their jurisdiction — with the said operations to continue till March 31.
