Islamabad: Federal Tax Ombudsman Mushtaq Ahmad Sukhera has directed the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to initiate action against non-compliant withholding agents, a news source reported on February 15.

The ombudsman issued the order under Section 161 of Income Tax Ordinance. He further instructed the taxation agency to register all non-compliant withholding agents on the tax roll and ensure submission of withholding statements in terms of Section 165 of the ordinance.
According to details, out of a total number of 11,273 withholding agents, 6,406 are not on tax roll as reflected by the data provided by the FBR.

Even most of the withholding agents, who are on NTN, are non-filers of withholding tax statements that they are required to submit under Section 165 of the ordinance. This causes large losses to the national exchequer.
FBR has been directed to take action and submit a compliance report within 60 days.
