Lahore: The China State Railway Group Co Ltd and the China North Industries have completed the development work at the Orange Line Metro Train project and handed over its control to the Punjab Mass Transit Authority, according to a news report published in national dailies on October 13. The train service is scheduled for official launch on October 25.
The OLMT has been developed as an early harvest project launched under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) initiative. It is the country’s first ever mass rapid urban transit train service. The construction work at the project site began in September 2015 and the launch was delayed several times owing to the potential risks to the historical buildings situated along the train’s route.

The train track is 25.58 kilometres in length and features 26 stations, out of which 24 stops fall on the elevated track, which stretches to 23.8 kilometre. The underground track was laid after altering the original development plan to protect historical buildings on and around GT Road.
The project is being prepared for its official launch announced for this month. In order to make it feasible, a team of experts from the Lahore Development Authority inspected the final works and issued instruction to make certain facilities operational. The team also directed the officials concerned to clear the connected roads and footpaths of debris and leftover construction material before October 20.
