Okara: The administrative status of the city of Okara has been upgraded from the Okara Municipal Committee to a Municipal Corporation (MC) by the Punjab government. The decision was made in light of the increase recorded in the city’s population number.

According to latest census figures, the urban population of Okara has increased from 357,935 to 430,766. The Deputy Commission of Okara recently extended the urban limits of the city to include 17 villages in the surrounding areas as part of Okara. Similarly, the Union Council of Bangla Gogera has been upgraded to the status of town committee since extension of its area.

On the other hand, Basirpur MC was demoted to town committee since its population has reduced to the level lower than required for municipal committee status under the new local government laws. Other municipal committees, including Dipalpur, Hujra Shah Muqeem and Renal Khurd held onto their prior status of category B MC.
