Islamabad: The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has banned the use of Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in public service vehicles (PSVs) – including school vans – on motorways and highways, according to a news source.
According to the OGRA officials, this ban has been imposed to ensure the ‘safety of public life and property’. Previously, the motorway police had launched a crackdown on LPG and CNG vehicles operating on M-1 and M-2 highways.
OGRA recently requested the provincial governments and the inspector general of the motorway police to take action against all such PSVs, and also called for a complete ban on LPG cylinders installed in vehicles.
The regulatory body took these measures in response to severe fire accidents that frequently take place due to the unauthorised placement of LPG cylinders in vehicles. As for school vans, no CNG cylinders will be allowed, as they endanger the lives of children and cause tragic accidents.
