Lahore: As many as 1.4 million people filed their returns compared to 1.1 million last year as the deadline for filing of income tax returns expired on December 17, a news source reported. The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) refused to extend the last date any further.
The deadline was automatically extended as the last date of filing of returns fell on a non-working day. As per General Clauses Act, the closing date was automatically extended to the next working day, that is, December 17.

Minister of State for Revenue Hammad Azhar later revealed that the government had launched a crackdown on 3,500 non-filers and gathered data of some 20,000 people who had bought vehicles worth over PKR 10 million or property worth over PKR 20 million in a year.
