Karachi: Numaish Chowrangi is to be transformed by having South Asia’s first underground bus station, according to a news report. The station will have a mezzanine floor and will have a mass transit system spanning over two underground floors.
The construction work for this will be initiated by the Karachi Infrastructure and Development Company Limited (KIDCL); which is also undertaking the construction of the Green Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project.
At the Numaish underpass, five BRT lines will integrate. A space for the passengers to sit and rest will also be constructed here. Construction on the project has been halted since the last 10 months because of major design changes. For diversions, Nishtar and Khurasan roads are being constructed properly by removing all encroachments in the area.
As per the initial plan, the Green Line BRT was to be constructed from Surjani Town to Gurumandir, but has been extended till Tower. The Red Line BRT will be integrated in the project from Safoora to Numaish underpass, whereas the Yellow Line BRT will come from Korangi. The mezzanine floor will facilitate commercial activities. Electrical, mechanical, heat ventilation, and air-conditioning systems along with firefighting systems are also being placed in the project.
