Lahore: The decision regarding whether or not the paperwork prepared and land acquired by the Punjab Land Development Company (PLDC) will be used for the construction of 5 million affordable homes under Naya Pakistan Housing Programme is to be taken soon, a news source quoted Punjab Housing Minister Mian Mehmood-Ur-Rasheed. The company was formed by ex-Chief Minister Punjab Mian Shahbaz Sharif for the construction of low-cost houses.
Back during the tenure of the previous government, PLDC constructed affordable houses in Ashiana Quaid, while their second project, Ashiana Iqbal, did not work out successfully. The company, nonetheless, has thousands of kanals of land available in possession, which was acquired for Ashiana projects in various cities of Punjab.
According to sources, PLDC has a total of 4,650 kanals of land in possession in Lahore, Kasur, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, and Sahiwal. While PC-1 for construction of homes in three of these cities had also been approved in the past. In Lahore alone, land measuring 3,100 kanals is available in Ashiana Iqbal while 130 kanals is available in Ashiana Quaid. The sources also claim that enough funds are also available to start the construction of 40,000 houses at the same time.
Reportedly, the Ministry of Housing is currently looking for land in mouzas instead of considering the land available in Ashiana Iqbal and Ashiana Quaid. In this regard, land measuring 106 kanals on Bedian Road, 387 kanals in Mouza Dulo Kallan, 87 kanals in Mouza Khardpura and 29 kanals and 8 marlas in Mouza Kattar in Raiwind has been identified.
