Lahore: Construction work on at least 12,000 low-cost residential units will begin in Lodhran, Chishtian and Renala Khurd next month, a news source quoted Punjab Minister for Housing, Urban Development and Public Health Engineering Mian Mehmood-ur-Rasheed. Applications to this effect will be received till January 10.
The government plans to construct five million affordable residential units in five years under its Naya Pakistan Housing Programme (NPHP). Another 10,000 residential units will be completed by June 2019. Akhuwat Foundation has collaborated with the government on the project.

Together with Akhuwat, the Ministry of Housing and Works will finance the construction of residential units for those who own a piece of land but have no funds to back the construction work. Applicants will be provided interest-free loans worth PKR 500,000 under the scheme.
The minister said that the construction work on 6,000 low-cost houses would soon begin in major cities of Punjab such as Lahore, Faisalabad, and Multan. He added that the working group has identified 200,000-kanal land bank for the project. The authorities concerned have been tasked to submit their recommendations in this regard.
The second phase of NPHP will cover the construction of 1,700 residential units in Jhelum while 10,000 houses will be built in Sialkot. The ministry has also constituted a committee to amend the basic laws of all the development authorities in order to facilitate the stakeholders.
