Lahore: The construction of 150,000 low-cost housing units under the Naya Pakistan Housing Programme (NPHP) is expected to start by December this year, a news source reported. Punjab Minister for Housing and Urban Development Mian Mehmood-ur-Rasheed sanctioned the approval for the initiative while chairing a Punjab Housing and Town Planning Agency (PHATA)’s board meeting yesterday.

PHATA Director General Liaqat Ali Chatta and other members of the agency were present at the occasion. Chatta briefed the meeting members on the developments carried out so far in the government’s flagship low-cost housing project, under which 5 million houses will be constructed in the next five years.

Chairing the meeting, Minister Rasheed informed that the land acquisition process for setting up low-cost housing projects under NPHP had sped up; particularly in Islamabad, Lahore, Jhelum, Sialkot, Layyah, Sargodha, Bhakar, Chiniot, and Quaidabad.

The provincial minister also mentioned that the process for inviting applications for NPHP projects in these cities would commence after Eid-ul-Fitr. He also directed the officers concerned to speed up the land acquisition drive for developing affordable housing projects in other cities of the province.
