Lahore: The Lahore Development Authority (LDA) has notified its Land Use Rules 2020, a news source reported on August 30. According to the notification, the authority has classified land in Lahore into 10 categories. These include residential, commercial, mixed-use, industrial, institutional, peri-urban, special development zone, agriculture, open space & recreational, and notified area.

The notification issued for LDA Land Use Rules 2020 further classified land into the broad categories of permitted use, permissible use, and prohibited use. As per the details revealed, the residential land in the city would have permitted use for construction of:
- House
- Apartment building
- Graveyard
- Horticulture nursery
- Parking & playground
- Old age home or orphanage
- Urban farm
- Urban forest
On the other hand, the permissible use for residential area includes the construction of:
- Corner or neighbourhood shop
- Convenience shop
- Place of worship
- Rehabilitation centre for the differently-abled persons
- Day-care centre and pre-school
- Primary & junior school, coaching centre or academy for educational purpose
- Secondary & higher secondary schools
- College & university
- Hospital
- Dispensary
- ATM
- Indoor sports facility
- Community centre or club
- Guest house
- Poly-clinic
- Parking plaza or parking site
- Area development project
- Library
- Diplomatic enclave or diplomatic office
- Government or semi-government office
The notification indicated the following permitted use for commercial area in Lahore:
- Residential apartment
- Multi-storey building
- Mixed-use building
- Court or tribunal comprising of land not less than 2 kanals
- Shopping mall
- Shops or group of shops
- Departmental store
Meanwhile, the permissible use for commercial area includes the construction of:
- Theatre
- Auditorium
- Cinema, Cineplex, or multiplex
- Concert hall, exhibition hall, or cultural institution
- Technical & vocational institution

For industrial area in the city, the permitted use incudes the construction of:
- Heavy or large industry
- Cottage, light & medium industry
- Warehouse, storage, or distribution centre; building material store
- Cold storage & ice factory
- Loading & unloading space
- Petrochemicals, petroleum, & gas products storage or warehouse
- Police station
- Bank or ATM
- Fire station
- Post office
- Parking lot
- Grid station
- Power plant
- Industrial park or estate
- Industrial research institute
- Treatment or recycling plant
- Vocational training institute
- Urban forest area
The permissible use of industrial area comprises the construction of:
- Essential residential, commercial, health and educational facility for workers or employees
- Hospital
- Restaurant
- Petrol pump
- Gas station
- LPG or LNG storage or filling station
- Oil depot
- Incineration plant
- Auto workshop
- Service garage & service station

Furthermore, LDA has prohibited the use of industrial area for storing, packing, cleaning, pursing, preparing, and manufacturing of blasting powder, fireworks, sulphur, gun powder, nitro-compounds, ammunition, dynamite, explosives, phosphorous, bombs, gases, mercury, or any type of hazardous or obnoxious material.
In regards to the Land Use Rules 2020, the civic agency held a seminar for various stakeholders. The aim of the event was to gather inputs, suggestions, and objections from the public pertaining to the rules introduced. LDA Chief Town Planner Tariq Mahmood assured the stakeholders that the authority would deliberate upon their input and present it to the governing body.
