Rawalpindi: Following up on the city’s receipt of a heavy rainfall spell on Thursday (May 14), the Rawalpindi Metropolitan Municipal Corporation, Cantt Board, and the district administration have issued red notices to the owners and residents of 280 dilapidated buildings to immediately vacate their premises, a news source reported.

Many of these buildings were built over a century ago, while some are in use of the public departments operating under the Government of Punjab. As per the details shared by the authority, around eight families reside in these buildings, on average; and although they are comprised of only two or three floors, their structures are considered too old and weak to stand their own weight.

Reportedly, the tenants living in these buildings resist vacating them since they believe that finding a residence on similar, lower rents in any other part of Rawalpindi would be difficult. Several sources claim that the matter regarding the vacating of these buildings is currently being heard in court; with the claimants seeking funds from the public department concerned to repair the deteriorating structures.

Government officials, however, have said that all dilapidated buildings will be vacated before the start of the monsoon season this year; and that the residents of these units would have to get the repair work done on their own.
