Islamabad: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has overturned the federal government’s decision to introduce a 200% increase in property taxes for properties situated in the capital city, according to a news source. The court directed the Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI) to collect property taxes as per the rates notified prior to the issuance of the tax-hike notification in 2019.

The petition in this regard was filed by Jamaat-e-Islami Naib Ameer Muhammad Aslam in October 2019. The IHC had directed the MCI and Capital Development Authority (CDA) to suspend the property tax collection notice till the issuance of the final verdict. In its judgment, the court mentioned that the CDA has no right to collect property taxes as the onus lies with the MCI.

Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani further ordered the departments concerned to conduct an audit of the CDA’s property tax collection matters from 2015 onwards. Justice Kayani further stated that the amount of tax collected by the CDA during said period should be submitted to the exchequer of the local government.
