Islamabad: Authorities have yet to set up a permanent landfill site as the current temporary dumping site – located in a residential sector – has run out of space, a news source reported. Capital Development Authority (CDA) had identified a site in Sangjani near Margalla Hills in May.
The federal capital generates 100 tonnes of garbage every day and the current I-12 site has filled up to the max, posing health and environmental risks and yet no steps have been taken to find a permanent site.
Several academic institutions, including the National University of Science and Technology and the International Islamic University, are also located near the dumping site.
CDA had allocated PKR 100 million for its landfill project in its budget for the fiscal year 2018-19. The director sanitation said the land in I-12 is filled to capacity and garbage is currently being dumped in the already full site.
He said Sangjani, at the foot of the Margalla Hills, is an ideal landfill site, adding that authorities concerned would take environmentalists on board over the matter.
