Rawalpindi: The National Highway Authority (NHA) Executive Board has approved the submission of Project Concept-I (PC-I) for the Kharian-Rawalpindi Motorway, as claimed by a news source on February 26.

According to the details, the Kharian-Rawalpindi Motorway, spanning 117.2 kilometers, is expected to connect Kharian to Rawalpindi, parallel to the N-5 route, passing through various populous areas and terminating near Rawat at T-Chowk. The revised cost of the project is PKR 169.323 billion, representing a 57% increase from the initial cost of PKR 108.41 billion. The revised cost includes a Viability Gap Funding (VGF) of PKR 40 billion.

The meeting, chaired by NHA Chairman Arshad Majeed Mohmand, also approved a project qualification proposal for endorsement by the Public Private Partnership Authority (P3A). Earlier, the project was sanctioned by ECNEC in January 2022, but the letter of intent to the successful bidder was rescinded due to failure to address key observations.
