Lahore: The Lahore Development Authority (LDA) has approved two new underpass projects – to be developed at Samanabad Chowk and Akbar Chowk – in the next fiscal year 21-22 (FY21), news sources reported. The projects are envisioned to resolve the rising traffic-related problems in the provincial capital.
In addition, the LDA engineering department has begun a feasibility assessment for the project to redesign traffic plan in the said regions. Both projects have a proposed budget of PKR 2.4 billion.

As per the details shared, the proposed design of the Akbar Chowk underpass involves dual underpasses on both sides, as well as the remodelling of the Maulana Shaukat Ali Road to improve traffic flow and access to the Kareem Block market. The project will reduce traffic turbulence and over 240,000 commuters will be benefited. On the other hand, the initial idea of constructing a flyover at Samanabad was rejected due to the Orange Metro line, and an underpass project was approved instead.
Recently, LDA has also started working on three more mega road infrastructure projects in Lahore, to address increasing traffic problems.
