As per the details, the measures taken by the Punjab government were not fruitful to bring down the AQI of the city. According to sources, one of the reasons behind the unsuccessful efforts was the inability of EPA to close the industries, which utilize sub-standard fuel to operate their factories at night. Other reasons include the ongoing construction of projects in different corners of the city, movement of heavy traffic, and no strict action taken against the smoke-emitting vehicles.

A focal person of EPA Dr Amir Farooq disclosed that the figures shared with the media were not accurate. Hence, the agency decided to adopt a new formula to ensure precise figures of AQI. Talking about the industries operating at night, he stated that the agency doesn’t have enough resources to check every industry. The Punjab government has asked police, district government, and Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) to conduct operations against the industries that violate smog SOPs.
