Karachi: Speakers at 15th Annual Environment Conference highlighted the feasibility of construction of two waste-to-energy plants in Jam Chakro and Gond Pass Karachi, according to a news report. The plants will consume at least 2,000 tonnes of 12,000 tonnes of waste generated in the city each day.
Sindh Energy Department Director Alternative Energy Mehfooz Qazi said that the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority had already issued a tariff to every province for an up to 50 megawatt waste-to-energy plant, incentivising private sector investment in this sector.
Karachi lacks basic infrastructure and resources to dispose waste, and only 60-70% of generated waste is properly disposed of. Caretaker Sindh Information and Environment Minister Jameel Yusuf said that people should take all measures necessary to curb problems associated with waste management.
