Peshawar: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has decided to conduct a physical inspection of 17 potentially dangerous glaciers in Chitral District, according to a news source. It will carry out this exercise in coordination with the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).
NDMA Chairman Lieutenant General Mohammad Afzal spoke to the press about this matter in the cabinet room of the Civil Secretariat, and said that the relevant authorities had been alerted about the glacial melt taking place in Chitral.
He also announces that both NDMA and PDMA agreed on joint physical inspection of around 17 potentially dangerous glaciers in the region. He also revealed that a team would go to Chitral within this week or the next by helicopter to inspect all the identified points.
Afzal stated that all possible precautionary measures would be taken to prevent disasters arising from glacial melt, but the situation cannot be handled by precaution alone. He emphasised on the need for early warning systems and afforestation to minimise the impact of flooding. However, he added, these measures would truly bear results in 10 to 20 years.
