Islamabad: National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Director General DG (Operations) Zahir Shah on Monday said that the accountability watchdog had retrieved PKR 178 billion and filed 600 corruption references in various accountability courts during the past year, a news source reported.

He expressed his views on the matter during a meeting held to review the data on recoveries made during 2019. NAB Chairman Justice (retired) Javed Iqbal presided over the session.
Shah revealed that the bureau had received 51,591 complaints during the last year out of which it addressed 46,123 concerns, while the remaining 13,299 were being resolved. Additionally, NAB had approved conducting verifications of 1,464 complaints out of which 1,362 verifications were done, while investigations were carried out on the remaining 770 complaints according to law.

DG (operations) informed that NAB had approved 574 inquiries, completed inquiries of 658 complaints, and 859 inquiries were being processed. NAB also approved 221 investigations out of which 217 had been conducted already, while the remaining investigations continued. At the moment, 1,275 corruption references involving corruption of PKR 944 billion are going through various stages of the hearing process.

In response, the NAB chairman said that the federal institution had adopted the policy of concluding mega corruption cases by involving a combined investigation team which acquire collective wisdom on modern lines. NAB has recommended 10-months’ time from complaint verification to filling of reference in Accountability Court on the basis of substantial evidence as per law.
