Islamabad: The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue on Tuesday (February 08) approved the bill to establish the Federal Government Properties Management Authority (FGPMA), news sources reported. The primary function of the newly-formed authority will be to recover and retrieve federal government-owned properties and land from encroachers and illegal occupation.

According to reports, the FGPMA was founded by an ordinance in August 2021. However, to provide the authority with a complete range of jurisdiction and a legal foundation, the administration chose to pass the bill through the National Assembly (NA). The committee unanimously passed the bill, emphasising the necessity for a centralised body to manage the land of multiple federal ministries, which amounts to trillions of rupees. It was revealed that the ministries control essential property that is now under invasion owing to either a lack of resources or a lack of mission. The FGPMA will operate on behalf of the ministries with land recovery and recovery mandates.

It is worth noting that the federal government has begun digital cadastral mapping of land across the country to assess government holdings. In November last year, prime minister (PM) Imran Khan unveiled the first phase of the digital map that uncovered PKR 5.5 trillion worth of government property encroached.
