Lahore: A panel of the National Assembly (NA) has directed the Ministry of Railways (MoR) to retrieve its land from encroachers in Lahore, a news source reported. This encroached chunk of land in the city spans across 175 acres.

The sub-committee of the Standing Committee on Railways held a meeting; chaired by Member National Assembly (MNA) Ramesh Lal. Senior Railways officials informed the sub-committee that the ministry was currently utilising about 37,351 acres of land. They added that out of the said area, 175 acres of land was under encroachment.
The senior officials revealed that the encroachments were of residential nature, while most of these fell within the operational zone of the Railways Department. They added that some encroachments served as illegal extensions of the existing slums following their establishment in 1985.
The Railways officials stated that the ministry had recovered 1,399 marlas of land worth PKR 271 million during 2019. The officials further stated that they had recovered leased land worth PKR 77.5 million.

In response, the NA panel urged the Railways Ministry to retrieve its encroached land in Lahore on an immediate basis.
