Islamabad: The federal government recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Airlift, a private ride-haling service, to procure electronic buses for several major cities – a news source reported. As per officials, the company is expected to introduce electric battery-powered public transport services in Karachi and Lahore as part of the programme’s initial launch phase – with the expansion of this initiative to the other cities also in the works.

The MoU was signed by the senior Airlift management and Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Hussain Chaudhry, who stated that the government had set a goal to ‘produce 30% of cheaper electricity from greener sources’. Further, he stated that the executive was making efforts to increase revenue to PKR 10 billion using green technology.
He said he believed that the future Pakistan of rested in the use of solar panels and electric vehicles. The increasing amount of inflation is due to more expensive electricity production through non-renewable resources.

The minister informed the gathering that the Ministry of Science & Technology was working towards signing an agreementwith the Punjab government for setting up a mega Bio-Technology Park. He added that the budget of the ministry had been increased by 600% during the current fiscal year.
