Lahore: The Punjab government has approved a new garbage tax that will apply to both residential and commercial properties across the province, as reported on July 29.

As per details, the new policy specifies that households, businesses, and even residents of informal settlements (kachi abadis) will be subject to this tax. In rural areas, the monthly garbage tax will be structured as follows:
- Residents of 5 marla houses will pay Rs. 200.
- Residents of houses between 10 marla and one kanal will pay Rs. 400.
Rural businesses will also see new charges:
- Small shops will pay Rs. 300 per month.
- Medium-sized businesses will incur a Rs. 700 monthly tax.
- Large enterprises, such as factories, workshops, and petrol stations, will also face a Rs. 700 garbage tax.
In urban areas, the garbage tax rates will be higher:
- Residents of 5 marla houses will pay Rs. 300 per month.
- Those in 10 marla houses will be taxed Rs. 500.
- Houses between 10 marla and one kanal will face a Rs. 2,000 tax.
- Larger houses will have a monthly tax of Rs. 5,000.
Urban businesses will be taxed as follows:
- Small commercial shops will pay Rs. 500 per month.
- Medium-sized businesses will face a Rs. 1,000 monthly tax.
- Factories, workshops, and large businesses will incur a Rs. 3,000 charge.
