Peshawar: The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has announced plans to divert the Swat River in April this year as part of the ongoing construction of the Mohmand Dam. According to WAPDA Chairman, Engr Lt-Gen (retd) Sajjad Ghani, the diversion system of the dam project is nearing completion.

Chairman Ghani conducted a site inspection at the Mohmand Dam, situated in the Mohmand district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, where he assessed the progress of various components including the spillway, diversion tunnels, and power house. The visit coincided with ongoing construction activities at 12 different sites associated with the project.
A progress review meeting was convened at the project office, during which Chairman Ghani received updates on the diversion scheme, concreting, and slope stabilization efforts at the spillway. Discussions also covered support works at the power house, excavation progress at irrigation tunnels, and construction activities along irrigation canals.

It was reported during the meeting that project offices and staff have been relocated to newly constructed facilities within the project area. Plans are in place to transition the remaining staff to completed buildings in the near future.
Chairman Ghani emphasized the importance of adhering to project timelines and directed the allocation of additional resources to expedite quarry development activities for the dam.
The Mohmand Dam, slated for completion in 2026, is a multipurpose project aimed at water storage for agriculture, flood control, urban water supply to Peshawar, and hydropower generation.

Upon completion, the dam will have a water storage capacity of 1.29 million acre-feet, facilitating irrigation across new lands and supplementing existing irrigation schemes. With an installed capacity of 800 megawatts, the dam is expected to contribute significantly to electricity generation in the region.
