Islamabad: The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) on Monday announced (August 2) that the authority has reached a significant milestone in the construction of the Mohmand Dam, news source reported. The authority was able to precisely join two sections of the second diversion tunnel (T2).

WAPDA Chairman retired Lt Gen Muzammil Hussain, Mohmand Dam General Manager and Project Director Mohammad Javed Afridi, and officials from Mohmand Dam Consulting Group and China Gezhouba Group Corporation attended the event.
According to WAPDA, the mining operation was accomplished by breaking through two sections from each side, one from the access tunnel and the other from the outlet portal. In an interview with the media, Gen Hussain remarked that reaching a milestone during the exhausting times of the ongoing pandemic is a good sign for the project.
Furthermore, the WAPDA Chairman praised the federal government and the Water Resources Ministry for their assistance. He went on to explain that projects like the Mohmand Dam are critical to resolving the water issue and meeting the country’s energy needs by generating affordable and clean hydel electricity.
During the event, the project director provided an update on the project’s progress. He stated that construction work was currently underway on 10 different locations and that the overall pace of the work was good.

The Mohmand Dam is being built on the Swat River in the Mohmand district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and is anticipated to be completed in 2025. When completed, the project will store about 1.2 million acres feet of water and will help irrigate 160,000 acres of existing land and 18,237 acres of new land.
