The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has decided to raise the issue of six deteriorating heritage sites and three museums. The sites, namely Rohtas Fort, Shalimar Gardens, Lahore Fort, archaeological ruins at Mohenjo Daro, the historical monument of Makli, and Buddhist ruins of Takht-e-Bahi and three national museums in Taxilla, Karachi and Swat are deteriorating because of the negligence of the provincial governments concerned.
According to a news source, the Information Ministry has decided to probe the matter to avoid delisting of heritage sites from UNESCO’s list of world heritage sites. Reportedly, the sites had been transferred to the provinces in line with the 18th Amendment, after which the condition of the sites started deteriorating.
