Islamabad: The Ministry of Maritime Affairs has finalised a new ‘Blue Economy Policy’ to revitalise the country’s shipping sector, according to a news report published on August 15. Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan on Saturday congratulated the ministry for finalising the said blueprint for the untapped sector of the national economy.

He further stated that this new economic policy would assist Pakistan in the generation of valuable foreign exchange reserves and harness its “enormous maritime potential”. He also reiterated the government’s resolve to fulfil said sector’s potential; adding that it would create new employment opportunities.
Meanwhile, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Ali Zaidi said that the government would overcome all hurdles impeding the development of the ‘Blue Economy’, which consisted of multiple sectors such as ports, fisheries, shipping companies, renewable energy, maritime transportation, tourism, climate change, and waste management.

He further announced the executive’s decision to announce a policy for deep sea fishing next month. He said that work on the deep sea fishing policy was in its final stages and consisted of four components. He acknowledged that the most important part of this policy was concerned with the protection and maintenance of both environment and aquatic life.
