Karachi: The Government of Sindh has decided to launch Million Tree Project for Tharparkar, a district struck with droughts and famine, reported a news source. In collaboration with Thar Foundation, the provincial govt. will plant seven different species of plants in an area measuring over 100 acres. Reportedly, 400,000 trees under the project have already been planted.
To help generate sources of income for the citizens of Thar, the government has decided to expand the Bio-Saline Technology project to other parts of the region. Under this project, which was successful in its test run, 16 kinds of vegetables and 11 kinds of fish will be farmed.
The local residents are also being given due representation in Thar Coal Power Plant, where 71% of the workers are originally from Thar. The power plant is to become operational in January. The local industries of Thar is also being promoted by the Thar Foundation, which is working on various programmes to promote local handicrafts. Training is also being provided to teach various skills to the locals.
To help deal with water shortage, Sindh Govt. handed over control of 8 Reverse Osmosis plants in Thar Coal Block II a month ago; the block II is home to 10,000 people.
