Karachi: Migratory birds were recently seen to flock in greater numbers to the provincial wetlands; causing experts to link their movement to the ongoing anti-COVID-19 lockdown restrictions that have limited the mobility of local hunters and bird catchers, according to news sources.

Sindh Wildlife Department’s provincial conservator Javed Ahmed Mahar highlighted that as per a survey conducted earlier this year, at least 741,042 birds have landed in the province – which is greater when compared with 248,105 birds witnessed in 2019.
Maher also said that the provincial authorities have not recorded any criminal wildlife-related activity since the lockdown was imposed and that has helped settle these birds.

Reportedly, 40% of the provincial wetlands are surveyed each year to map the migratory patterns and number of birds. These migrating birds – including mallards, pelicans, cranes and waders – make a temporary stop in Pakistan on their way to and from Siberia. There are over 33 wildlife sanctuaries and one national park in Sindh that houses over 300 bird species.
