Islamabad: The Meteorological Department on Wednesday (January 19) issued a red warning regarding heavy snowfall in Murree, and rains in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, news sources reported. The Met department has asked relevant authorities and administrations of the concerned areas to be vigilant regarding any situation.

According to reports, the weather will be rainy and chilly for the next week owing to the arrival of a new weather system in the upper and central areas of the country. Islamabad, Murree, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and portions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab are also predicted to see rain and snow. As per the alert issued, on Saturday and Sunday, heavy snowfall may cause road closures in Murree, Galiyat, Nathiagali, Kaghan, Naran, Dir, Swat, Chitral, Astore, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Neelum Valley, Bagh, and Haveli districts, while heavy falls may cause urban flooding in Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Faisalabad, and Sialkot. While due to heavy rain landslides are expected in parts of KP and Murree.

The Rawalpindi city district administration has stated that the authority is adequately equipped and manned to deal with the weather changes and heavy rainfall. Drains and underpasses have been cleared in this regard to allow for the smooth flow of water. It is also worth noting that, in the aftermath of the sad Murree tragedy, the Punjab government has limited vehicle entrance into the mountainous area, as well as imposed a traffic ban after 5 pm.
